Aquabion S15 Water Conditioner – Salt-Free Limescale Inhibitor, 15mm (1/2"), Maintenance-Free, 7-Year Life

15mm / ½" Connection No Salt · No Chemicals · No Power 95–98% Effective 7-Year Service Life Made in Germany

The Aquabion S15 is a compact, maintenance-free electrolytic water conditioner designed for homes with a 15mm (½") incoming mains supply — typically properties using one or two showers at a time. Using the same patented galvanic zinc anode technology deployed in hotels, restaurants, and industrial facilities worldwide, it converts hard limescale-forming calcium into a soft, non-adhering crystalline form (aragonite) that washes harmlessly through your pipes — protecting your boiler, heating system, and appliances without salt, chemicals, electricity, or any ongoing maintenance. Install it once and it works continuously for up to 7 years.

Nearly 60% of UK homes receive hard water — and if yours is one of them, limescale is silently costing you money every day. A layer of limescale just 1.5mm thick on a boiler heat exchanger can increase energy consumption by over 10%. Appliances run harder, fail sooner, and require more frequent servicing. The Aquabion S15 addresses this at the source — at the point where mains water enters your home — so every litre of water flowing to your boiler, taps, showers, dishwasher, and washing machine has been treated before it reaches them.

Why Choose the Aquabion S15?

⚗️ Patented Galvanic TechnologyZinc sacrificial anodes release zinc ions that react with calcium to form aragonite — a soft, non-adhering crystal. Unlike magnetic or electronic conditioners, this is a proven permanent electrolytic process, not an external field effect.
🔬 Independently Verified: 95–98% EffectiveMultiple independent laboratory tests confirm Aquabion's effectiveness. Test reports are freely downloadable from the Aquabion UK website — unlike competing products, whose claims are rarely backed by verifiable independent data.
🚿 Right-Sized for 1–2 Shower HomesThe S15 is precisely calibrated for 15mm mains supplies and homes where one or two showers run at a time. Correct sizing is critical — oversizing reduces performance. For 22mm mains or higher simultaneous demand, see the S20.
🔧 Zero Maintenance — EverNo salt to top up, no cartridges to replace, no electrical components to fail, no app to check, no service engineer required. Install it once and it runs silently for 7 years.
🍼 Safe for Drinking Water & Baby FormulaUnlike salt-based softeners, the Aquabion adds no sodium to your water. Drinking water quality is unaffected — it is safe to use for all domestic water purposes including baby formula. WRAS approved for use on drinking water systems.
💶 Cost Recovery in 2–3 YearsReduced boiler servicing costs, lower energy bills, longer appliance life, and fewer call-outs typically return the purchase cost within 2–3 years — then savings continue for the remaining 4–5 years of the unit's life.
🌱 Environmentally ResponsibleNo salt discharge into drainage or rivers. No chemical waste. No electricity consumption. Fully recyclable at end of life. Aquabion UK operates an end-of-life return programme.
🏭 Commercial-Grade in a Domestic FormThe S15 is built to the exact same standard as the large commercial Aquabion units used in factories, hotels, and hospitals. It is not a domestic compromise — it is a domestic-sized commercial product.
♻️ Self-Cleaning DesignPatented internal agitators create turbulence that keeps the unit self-cleaning — no filters, no mechanical parts to wear, no user intervention required during its entire 7-year service life.
🌡️ Minerals RetainedThe healthy calcium and magnesium minerals naturally present in hard water remain in the water — only the form of the calcium is changed, not the mineral content. You get the health benefits without the scaling problems.
🛡️ DVGW Certified — Winner 2023Holds the prestigious DVGW W 270 certification, the German standard for microbiological water testing. Also approved by TÜV Nord, ACS (France), OFI (Austria), DVGW, and WRAS (UK drinking water).
🔑 Simple Installation — 1–2 HoursInstalls inline on the mains supply using standard compression fittings. No specialist tools required. Includes earthing cable and earthing straps as required by the installation instructions.

How It Works — The Science Behind Aquabion

Hard water contains calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) dissolved in its ionic form. When this water is heated or loses pressure, the calcium precipitates out and bonds to surfaces as limescale — the rock-hard deposit that coats boiler elements, pipe walls, tap internals, and shower screens.

Aquabion works by introducing a controlled galvanic reaction directly within the water flow. The unit's zinc sacrificial anodes release a small, precisely calibrated quantity of zinc ions (Zn²⁺) into the passing water. These zinc ions react with the calcium ions already present, triggering a crystalline phase change: the calcium shifts from its adherent calcite form to a non-adherent aragonite form. Aragonite has the same chemical composition as calcite (it is still calcium carbonate) but a different crystal structure — one that cannot bond to pipe walls, boiler elements, or other surfaces. It passes harmlessly through the system and is flushed away with normal water flow.

🔄 What happens to existing limescale?
Aquabion also has a gradual curative effect on existing limescale deposits. As treated water flows past old limescale, the aragonite crystals slowly erode the deposit from its surface. Over weeks and months after installation, existing scale softens and is gradually flushed away. You may notice softer, more easily cleaned deposits on your kettle and shower screen during this period — this is the system working correctly. Old hard limescale is being displaced by soft aragonite that wipes away rather than requiring chemical or mechanical removal.

The internal self-cleaning agitators (a patented Aquabion design feature) create turbulence upstream and downstream of the zinc anodes. This turbulence maximises contact between the zinc ions and the calcium in the water, and simultaneously keeps the anode surfaces clean — which is why Aquabion requires no maintenance or periodic servicing. As the zinc anodes are gradually consumed by the galvanic reaction, they are naturally replenished from the anode mass inside the unit, maintaining consistent performance throughout the 7-year service life.

Which Aquabion Do I Need — S15 or S20?

Correct sizing is critical to Aquabion performance. Oversizing does not improve results — it reduces them, because the water passes through the unit too quickly for optimal zinc ion contact. Aquabion sizing is based on actual peak flow demand, not pipe size alone.

Model Best For Pipe Size Length
S15 (this product) Homes using 1–2 showers simultaneously; 15mm incoming mains 15mm / ½" 120mm
S20 Homes using 2–4 showers simultaneously; 22mm incoming mains 22mm / ¾" 180mm
⚠️ Sizing Rule: If your incoming mains is 15mm — even if your peak demand is occasionally higher — the S15 is the correct choice. The S20 should not be installed on 15mm pipework without prior discussion with Aquabion. If in doubt, contact your Aquabion distributor with your stop tap size and shower usage details.

Where to Install

The Aquabion S15 should be installed as close to the incoming stop tap as possible — ideally immediately after it — so that the entire household water supply is treated before it reaches any appliance, tap, or heating circuit. Installing downstream of any branch points means those branches will receive untreated water.

The unit installs inline using standard 15mm compression fittings (not included — use standard plumbing fittings appropriate for the pipework type). It can be installed in any orientation — horizontal, vertical, or at an angle — as long as water flows in the direction of the arrow marked on the body. The included earthing cable and straps must be connected as shown in the installation instructions to ensure correct galvanic operation and to comply with electrical equipotential bonding requirements.

✅ Installation Requirements

Install on metal pipework, or plastic pipework with a minimum of one pipe length of metal pipework both upstream and downstream of the unit. Connect the supplied earthing cable and earthing straps as instructed — this is required for both correct galvanic operation and compliance with BS 7671 equipotential bonding. Installed by a competent plumber in 1–2 hours. No special tools required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I still see limescale after installing the Aquabion?

Yes — you will still see deposits in your kettle, on shower screens, and around taps. The difference is that the deposit is now soft aragonite rather than hard calcite. It wipes away easily with a cloth without scrubbing or chemical cleaners. Over time you should notice it becomes progressively easier to clean, as the system also slowly breaks down existing hard deposits.

Is the S15 the right size for my home?

The S15 is correct for homes with a 15mm incoming mains supply and where you typically use one shower at a time (or occasionally two). If you have a 22mm mains or regularly use two or more showers simultaneously, you need the S20. Never oversize — it reduces effectiveness. If unsure, contact Aquabion UK with your stop tap size and usage details before ordering.

Does it work with a combi boiler?

Yes — the Aquabion S15 is compatible with combi boilers, system boilers, heat-only boilers, and unvented cylinders. Install it on the incoming cold water mains supply immediately after the stop tap and it will protect your entire heating and hot water system.

Can I use it with a water tank (indirect system)?

Yes — install on the incoming mains feed. The treated water fills your cold water tank and is then drawn through your system as normal. The aragonite conversion remains effective in stored water.

Is it safe to drink the treated water?

Yes. Aquabion is WRAS approved for use on drinking water supplies. The tiny amount of zinc introduced is well within safe drinking water limits — far below the WHO guideline of 3 mg/l for zinc in drinking water. No sodium is added. It is safe for babies, pregnant women, and those on low-sodium diets.

Can I use Aquabion-treated water in a fish pond?

No — the trace zinc levels that are safe for human consumption can be harmful to fish, particularly sensitive species such as Koi, trout, salmon, and goldfish. Do not fill fish ponds or aquariums with Aquabion-treated water.

How hard does my water need to be for the Aquabion to be effective?

The Aquabion works at all standard UK water hardness levels. Performance is optimal up to approximately 400 ppm (parts per million) of calcium carbonate — which covers virtually all UK hard water areas. Above 400 ppm (found in less than 1% of UK areas), performance may be reduced and Aquabion UK should be consulted first.

What happens after 7 years?

The zinc anodes are gradually consumed during normal operation. After 7 years the anodes are depleted and the unit should be replaced. Aquabion operates an end-of-life return programme — the old unit is sent for reconditioning and a discount is typically offered on the replacement. The unit does not fail catastrophically — it simply becomes less effective as the anodes exhaust.

Does it protect steam appliances or steam ovens?

No — Aquabion provides reduced effectiveness for applications above 80°C where water is converted to steam, such as steam ovens and commercial steam dishwashers. At these temperatures some of the beneficial aragonite conversion is reversed. For these applications, Aquabion estimates approximately 50% effectiveness — scaling frequency is reduced but not eliminated.
