Frequently Asked Questions
Can this heat pump replace my gas boiler for hot water?
Yes — the Becker & Wolf all-in-one heat pump is designed as a direct replacement for gas water heaters and combi boiler DHW. It provides mains-pressure hot water independently of any boiler. You will need a suitable indoor space (minimum ~5–8m³ for wall-mounted, ~10–15m³ for floor-standing) with sufficient ventilation or air duct connection. An F-Gas or REFCOM qualified engineer must handle the refrigerant if the unit ever needs regassing.
What ambient temperature does the heat pump work at?
The heat pump operates in ambient air temperatures from –7°C to +43°C. Below about 5°C, COP reduces; the integrated 2 kW electric backup heater automatically activates at low temperatures to maintain the set water temperature. In practice, most UK installations operate efficiently throughout the year.
Does it need an outdoor unit?
No — this is a self-contained all-in-one unit. The heat pump compressor, heat exchanger, fan, and storage tank are all integrated in one unit. There is no separate outdoor unit and no refrigerant pipework to run between two units. The unit draws heat from the room air and can be installed entirely indoors, optionally ducted to draw or exhaust air through an external wall.
What room size does this need for installation?
As a rough guide: wall-mounted 80L/100L units need a minimum space of approximately 5–8m³; floor-standing 200–300L units need approximately 10–20m³. The heat pump extracts heat from the surrounding air — too small a space will cause the room to cool too quickly, reducing efficiency. Alternatively, connect a 150mm air duct (floor-standing models) to draw from or exhaust to outside air, allowing installation in smaller spaces.
Is this MCS certified?
The Becker & Wolf heat pump water heaters are A+ ErP-rated and CE certified. Please check with Quality Heating / your installer regarding current MCS certification status for eligibility for any available UK government grants or incentive schemes.
What is the Legionella control cycle?
The Becker & Wolf units can reach 75°C, sufficient for thermal disinfection of the tank to control Legionella bacteria. A periodic disinfection cycle can be scheduled via the Becker & Wolf app or the control panel. UK guidance recommends domestic hot water systems store water at 60°C or above to control Legionella risk.
Can it be connected to solar PV?
Yes — the unit can be timed or configured to run primarily during daylight hours when solar PV generation is highest, reducing running costs further. Integration with solar divert controllers (such as Eddi, Zappi, or similar) is possible by scheduling the boost/immersion mode via the app or an external timer.
What household size is the 200L suited to?
The 200L BWHP200R290 is designed for 3–4 person households with moderate to high daily hot water demand — enough for 2 showers, kitchen use, and a bath within a few hours of recovery. For larger families or higher demand properties, consider the 250L or 300L models.
How does the 200L compare to the 250L floor-standing model?
Both are floor-standing R290 all-in-one units. The 250L offers 25% more tank storage, a higher heating capacity, and a higher ErP energy efficiency rating (A++ vs A+ for the 200L). If your household regularly runs out of hot water with a 200L tank, the 250L is the logical step up.
Can I duct the unit to draw outside air?
Yes — the BWHP200R290 has a 150mm duct collar fitted as standard. You can connect a 150mm duct to draw outside air into the unit's evaporator, or to exhaust cooled air outside. This is particularly useful in small utility rooms where the unit would otherwise cool the room excessively in winter. Note that the heat pump's COP is highest with warmer incoming air.
